Fundamentals of system theory – lecture

Topics of issues for the lectures:

Organization of classes. Overview of the conditions for passing. Presentation of the scope of the material.

Introduction of basic concepts – definitions of control, regulation, linearity, stationarity, signal, automation element (UAR, LTI).

Fundamentals of system theory – laboratory

Due to the desire to correlate your classes with the IT topic, the scope of the material during the laboratory classes will concern brain-computer technology, as an example of a system in automation.

Information on the organization of laboratories for Fundamentals of system theory:

1. Each student gets to know the equipment at the Neuroscience Laboratory. According to the schedule below.

For one group of two students there is one Emotiv EPOC + NeuroHeadset device.

1. Organizational classes.

2. The first attempt to start the device in groups of three. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 01.12.2022.

Each Student describes the Emotiv EPOC + NeuroHeadset device. You should pay attention to the fact what are the parameters of its work. I recommend the manufacturer’s website.

2. Calibration attempt with the device – in groups. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 01.12.2022.

Each Student describes in our own words the calibration process with the device based on information from the manufacturer.

3. Tests of applications attached to the device, including: EPOC Control Panel, tabs: Headset Setup – in groups. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 01.12.2022.

Each Student describes of application  functionality on the basis of screenshots available on the web. The Headset Setup tab is particularly important.

4. Tests of applications attached to the device, including: EPOC Control Panel, tabs: Expressive Suite and Cognitive Suite – in groups. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 01.12.2022.

Each Student describes of application  functionality on the basis of screenshots available on the web. The Expressive Suite and Cognitive Suite tabs are particularly important.

5. Tests of applications Emotiv Xavier TestBench including FFT module – part I  – in groups. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 01.12.2022.

Each Student describes the Emotiv Xavier TestBench including FFT module application based on information available on the web and on the manufacturer’s website. Each Student present a brief description of the FFT and EEG signals.

6. Tests of applications 3D Brain Visualizer, Brain Activity Map – in groups of three. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 01.12.2022.

Each Student describes 3D Brain Visualizer and Brain Activity Map applications based on information available on the web and on the manufacturer’s website. Each Student present a brief description of the work of the human brain and areas of the cerebral cortex.

7. Tests of applications Spirit Mountain, Cortex Arcade – in groups. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 01.12.2022.

Each Student describes Spirit Mountain and Cortex Arcade applications based on information available on the web and on the manufacturer’s website. Each Student present the possibilities of using these applications.

01.12.2022 – Assessment of Report No. 1.

8. Work on the Laboratory Report no. 2. Presentation of the unit model of neuron work. Mathematical description. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 12.01.2023.

9. Work on the Laboratory Report no. 2. Presentation of one population model of the fraction of neuronal cells. Including a mathematical description of the model. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 12.01.2023.

10. Work on the Laboratory Report no. 2. Each Student prepares a laboratory report separately at the 12.01.2023.

12.01.2023 – Assessment of Report No. 2.

The Report no. 1 should contain information:

1.  Title page with the author of the work
2. Test days and basic data about the examined person: age, sex
3. Characterizing the measurement system: device and System 10-20
4. Presentation of research results with a description of what they concern. Each student takes measurements on himself or his colleagues in order to collect data. This data should be reported in the Laboratory Report.

For this purpose, screenshots from the Emotiv Control Panel application, tabs: Headset Setup, Expressive Suite, Cognitive Suite and Emotiv Test Bench, 3D Brain Visualizer, Brain Activity Map should be presented.

5. Commentary on the research results obtained.

Student’s task is to learn in practice the brain-computer technology, including the Emotiv EPOC + NeuroHeadset device. During the classes, work with the device is verified. Calibrate with it. Tests of applications attached to the device, including: EPOC Control Panel, Xavier Control Panel, Mouse Emulator, 3D Brain Visualizer, Brain Activity Map, Emotiv Xavier TestBench including FFT module, EmoBot, EmoKey, Neuro MouseControl, Spirit Mountain, Cortex Arcade, Axo. Each student should take screenshots of their work, which they then post in a report on Fundamentals of System theory.

The Report no. 1 should contain about 10 A4 pages with screenshots and description.

Date of submission of the Report no. 1: December 1, 2022.

The Report no. 2 should contain information:

1.  Title page with the author of the work.

2. Presentation of the unit model of neuron work with mathematical description.

3. Presentation of one population model of the fraction of neuronal cells.

The Report no. 2 should contain about 6 A4 pages with description of model.

Date of submission of the Report no. 2: January 12, 2023.

If you want to improve your grade, an Laboratory test is scheduled for: January 19, 2023.
